I’m sure you’ve heard this question before. I know that when my mom and dad were growing up, they had a garden with green onions every year. They would never throw one away, and it seemed like the onion was always regrowing in their garden! But does an onion really grow back? The answer is yes!
How many times can you regrow green onions?
A freshly cut onion can be regrown to produce green onions indefinitely! Just add it in water and the process will start. You’ll notice that after a while, they slow down or stop producing altogether. That’s because of lack nutrients, it’s basically used up everything it had stores in itself as well as what might have been floating around in the water itself.
When this happens you have 2 options, you can plant it in the soil again and allow it to continue growing, or you can add nutrients to the water it’s growing in. However, at a certain point, it might be better to just start working on a dedicated hydroponics system. You can even buy cheap kits to help that process along.
Bottom line, You can regrow green onions as many times as you want indefinitely as long as your actively taking care of it and replace the nutrients it sucks up to grow.
